“You will now meet my friend Mr. Lester Green, a victim of
robbery in a grocery store. He took bullet for his wife. He saved his wife. I
have to give him beautiful face. I cannot send him to paradise as a monster. No.
I have to change this. I have to give him beautiful face. Yeah I would do
that. The face of Cary Grant or James
Dean. That’s what he needs. What do you think? Hmm?"
Best F(r)iends is
a film that was inspired by a road trip that both Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero
took along the California coast in 2003. Greg expected they were having it for
a good time together, but Tommy had come to believe that Greg was plotting to
kill him by either throwing him off a cliff or some elaborate way to kill him.
Greg remembers it as one of the most bizarre things that happened in his life
so he decided to make a film about it along with other things that happened
with him and Tommy.
The film is
definitely a bizarre comedy thriller. It’s somewhat hard to categorize the
film’s genre because it’s a little bit of everything. Someone told me that it’s
the best arthouse film he’s ever seen, which I somewhat agree with that
statement. I found the film to be a breath of fresh air with its originality.
The film is about a drifter who befriends a mortician, who collects gold teeth
off the people he makes “beautiful”, and they decide to get rich off it. That’s
all I’m giving you plot wise because it’s better going into this film knowing
hardly anything about it.
Best F(r)iends is surprisingly a great film.
I was expecting it to be so bad it’s good like the Room, but I was shocked how
much I enjoyed the film. It was shot well, beautiful cinematography, the score
was good, has a good story, and believe it or not the acting was quite good.
Tommy Wiseau gave a wonderful performance as well as Greg. The only thing that
bothered me was that some of the editing was a bit poor, but it can be
overlooked. It feels very Lynchian at times too. I’m giving the Best F(r)iends
a perfect score because it got me instantly invested and ultimately I fell in
love with the film. I haven’t fell in love with a film since Blade Runner 2049.
I’ll definitely see Best F(r)iends Volume 2 when it comes out in June. What a
story Greg! Highly recommend.
